Mazda Bongo Van Review: Specifications, Image and Price

The Mazda Bongo is a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive van (see also: Mazda Bongo truck), manufactured by Mazda Motor Corporation since 1966. The first and second generations was rare on Sri Lankan roads and the crew cab and mini-truck versions were seldom seen. The third generation of the Mazda Bongo, also re-badged as Ford Econovan, received a good attention from Sri Lankan vehicle buyers. Naturally, to the Sri Lankan vehicle market, the delivery version of the van was used for dual purposes, carrying goods as well as passengers. The R2 diesel engine of the third generation proved itself for the quality of fuel and rough usage in our environment. The uni-body structure (as opposed to chassis-mounted previous versions) proved to be stronger and more silent on rough roads.

A longer version of Bongo was made available with more cargo space and of course allowing more passengers, called the Bongo Browny / Brawny. This version is mainly used for commuting as opposed to delivery purposes. It received two facelifts before merging with the Nissan Vanette series, known as Bongo Vanette or Bongo Lion Face, in the Sri Lankan urban dictionary of motor vehicles.

Top 10 Reasons to Consider When Buying a Mazda Bongo

1. History and Facts about Mazda Bongo in Sri Lanka

The Mazda Bongo is a practical, dual-purpose vehicle, with a proven record in Sri Lanka. The diesel variant, especially, holds a good market reputation with a strong R2 diesel engine, which is simple yet powerful with a top lower end torque. The uni-bodied, simple yet lean design appealed to many vehicle buyers to consider Mazda Bongo an option although this segment is highly dominated by Toyota. Vertically arranged front door handles were different to the common design of other vehicles in this segment and good ground clearance was certainly a plus point in the process of the buying decision.

Floor-mounted gear lever is another plus as opposed to Isuzu Fargo, Toyota HiAce LH30, 40 and 60 ranges, which were direct competitors of this generation of Mazda Bongo. The design of the front door glasses allowed better vision for the driver. Fuel flap is nicely concealed on the B pillar, between the front door and the sliding door on the side. Mid-engine design allowed better utilization of space. Later versions were accommodated with extended front bumpers to improve safety of the front occupants. The front compartment can accommodate two passengers in addition to the driver, in contrast to other vans in the same category such as the Toyota TownAce, Toyota Liteace, and the Nissan Vanette. Most vehicles sold in Sri Lanka are outfitted with front air conditioning and power-assisted steering wheels. Later versions are better equipped with additional features such as central locking and front power shutters.
