The origins of the prominent Sri Lankan automobile manufacturer and assembler Micro Cars Limited can be traced back to more than 20 years ago, when the Sri Lankan engineer and entrepreneur Dr. Lawrence Perara founded the company in 1995. With huge amount of attention from the media and government support, especially from the investment board, helped the company to rise through the ranks to become an influential player in the Sri Lankan vehicle market.

Based in Peliyagoda within the western province of the country, the company is most famous for producing small size city cars for Sri Lanka’s middle class. Particularly the Micro Panda, which is one of the cheapest cars offered in Sri Lanka, is a model that helped Micro Cars to gain traction within the island.

Founded in the mid 90’s, the first ever car to come out of the Micro Cars Corporation was released to the market in the early 2000’s. As Sri Lanka’s first locally manufactured car, it used at least 60% of locally produced materials.

Micro MX7 Mark II

The Micro MX7 Mark II, which is sometimes also referred as the Micro Geely MX 7 MARK II, is one of the most popular sedans made by the Micro Cars Corporation in Sri Lanka. It is essentially a rebadged version of the Geely MK, and comes with a 1.5 L, 4 cylinder, 4 stroke, inline EFI engine and a 5 speed manual transmission to power its drive train. According to the specifications of the car, the Micro MX7 Mark II is capable of generating a maximum power output of around 69 kW @ 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of around 128 Nm @ 3400 rpm, resulting in a top speed of 165 km/h. The car also has a very favorable fuel economy with roughly 15.8 km/l on a combined drive cycle recorded on Sri Lanka’s roads.

Micro Panda

The Panda, badge assembled by the Micro Cars Company, is by far the most popular vehicle from the carmaker that is being sold in Sri Lanka. Its small size, attractive design and very competitive price has helped it to win the hearts of many first time car buyers of Sri Lanka. For its smaller size, the Panda is powered by a reasonably large 1.3 L, 4-cylinder inline, 4 stroke, DOHC 16 Valve, EFI engine, which also utilizes a 5 speed manual transmission to power its drive train. Micro Rexton

The Rexton, which was made in collaboration with the Korean vehicle manufacturer SsangYong Motor, is one of the leading SUV models that are being offered by the Micro Cars Company. Its prominent executive design combined with a range of features being offered, has made it a popular model among wealthy business owners, professionals and corporate executives in Sri Lanka. The newest version of the Rexton is powered by a well capable 2.0 L diesel RX200 e-XDi 4 cylinder engine that uses an E-Tronic 5 Speed automatic transmission to power its drive train. Nevertheless, the Rexton also has a favorable fuel economy on Sri Lankan roads, with roughly around 12.8 km/l recorded on a combined cycle.

Micro Kyron

The Kyron from Micro Cars is also a creation that resulted from the collaboration with the SsangYong Motor Company of Korea. It is a cheaper option for those who could not afford the Micro Rexton. The Kyron also had an attractive executive design that helped it to gain a firm foothold on the country’s upper middle class. The SUV is powered using a very capable 2.0 L, Diesel (4-cylinder in-line), Turbo Intercooler engine that used a 6 Speed manual or automatic transmission to power its drive train. It achieved a very high maximum power output of around 141 hp @ 4,000 rpm and a maximum torque of around 310 Nm @ 1,800 rpm, which made it one of the most powerful SUV’s under its price category in Sri Lanka.

Micro Trend

The Micro Trend was one of the company’s fully locally manufactured and marketed city cars. It was offered to a highly competitive price category yet had many comfort and convenience features that helped it to become popular among Sri Lanka’s first time car buyers. Even though technically discontinued, the second hand value of the car is still at a high-level, giving proof to its popularity in Sri Lanka. Powered by a 1075 cc twin cam 16 valves, 4-cylinder engine, the car used a 5 speed manual transmission to power its drive train, generating a 48 kW @ 5700 rpm in the process. An interesting fact about the Micro Trend is that this car was designed by Italy's world renowned Pininfarina and Hafei Motors, providing a statement to its excellent ingenuity.
