The origins of the prominent Sri Lankan automobile manufacturer and assembler Micro Cars Limited can be traced back to more than 20 years ago, when the Sri Lankan engineer and entrepreneur Dr. Lawrence Perara founded the company in 1995. With huge amount of attention from the media and government support, especially from the investment board, helped the company to rise through the ranks to become an influential player in the Sri Lankan vehicle market.

Based in Peliyagoda within the western province of the country, the company is most famous for producing small size city cars for Sri Lanka’s middle class. It is essentially a rebadged version of the Geely MK, and comes with a 1.5 L, 4 cylinder, 4 stroke, inline EFI engine and a 5 speed manual transmission to power its drive train. Micro Panda

For its smaller size, the Panda is powered by a reasonably large 1.3 L, 4-cylinder inline, 4 stroke, DOHC 16 Valve, EFI engine, which also utilizes a 5 speed manual transmission to power its drive train. The Rexton, which was made in collaboration with the Korean vehicle manufacturer SsangYong Motor, is one of the leading SUV models that are being offered by the Micro Cars Company. Its prominent executive design combined with a range of features being offered, has made it a popular model among wealthy business owners, professionals and corporate executives in Sri Lanka. The newest version of the Rexton is powered by a well capable 2.0 L diesel RX200 e-XDi 4 cylinder engine that uses an E-Tronic 5 Speed automatic transmission to power its drive train. Nevertheless, the Rexton also has a favorable fuel economy on Sri Lankan roads, with roughly around 12.8 km/l recorded on a combined cycle.

Micro Kyron

The SUV is powered using a very capable 2.0 L, Diesel (4-cylinder in-line), Turbo Intercooler engine that used a 6 Speed manual or automatic transmission to power its drive train. It achieved a very high maximum power output of around 141 hp @ 4,000 rpm and a maximum torque of around 310 Nm @ 1,800 rpm, which made it one of the most powerful SUV’s under its price category in Sri Lanka.

Micro Trend

The Micro Trend was one of the company’s fully locally manufactured and marketed city cars. Even though technically discontinued, the second hand value of the car is still at a high-level, giving proof to its popularity in Sri Lanka. Powered by a 1075 cc twin cam 16 valves, 4-cylinder engine, the car used a 5 speed manual transmission to power its drive train, generating a 48 kW @ 5700 rpm in the process.
