2016 SsangYong Actyon

First established more than 60 years ago in what is modern day South Korea, the SsangYong Motor Company or simply SsangYong Motor, is a vehicle manufacturer that worked hard to become a popular automobile maker in the world. It was initially inaugurated as Ha Dong-Hwan Motor Workshop in 1954, but later merged with Dongbang Motor Co in mid-1963 and was taken over by the SsangYong Business Group in 1986, to become the SsangYong Motors that we see today.

Currently headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, the SsangYong Motor Company went through a number of changes and transformations that gradually helped it to establish itself as a reliable utility vehicle manufacturer. Initially, it started its international expansion by manufacturing Jeeps, trucks as well as buses for the US military and then entering into a partnership with Daimler-Benz of Germany, which has helped it immensely to gain technology as well as international recognition in the process. In February 2011, Mahindra & Mahindra Limited of India acquired the SsangYong Motor Company, and introduced its landmark SUV model the SsangYong Tivoli in 2015, under the leadership of its new owner.

The SsangYong Rexton has been the flagship SUV model from SsangYong for a number of years. Being in production since 2001, it is also the largest size SUV from the company, with either a five-seat or a seven-seat configuration, even though it is actually considered as a mid-size SUV. To move its prominent mass and its passengers, the SsangYong Rexton comes with a surprisingly powerful engine for its configuration, which is a 2.0 L diesel RX200 e-XDi 4-cylinder in-line locomotive that also uses an E-Tronic 5-Speed Automatic transmission to move its capable drivetrain. As a result, SsangYong Rexton can produce 114 kW of power and 360 Nm of torque, which is plentiful to tackle the commuting challenges seen in Sri Lanka.

  1. SsangYong Kyron

The SsangYong Kyron is without a doubt one of the most popular SUV models from SsangYong to be sold within the Sri Lankan market. Also called the Micro Kyron in Sri Lanka, the SUV has been in production since 2005. Built as a mid-size five-seat five-door hatchback SUV, the SsangYong Kyron is a remarkably capable vehicle that comes with a powerful engine. The base train of the Kyron is powered using a 2.0 L, XDi 270 4-cylinder diesel engine that also uses a 5 speed G-Tronic transmission to move its drivetrain. This allows the SsangYong Kyron to achieve 104 kW of power and 310 Nm of torque, to reach a top speed of 170 km/h on the highways seen in our country.

One of the down sides to this vehicle, particularly in its first generation was its outer design, which even though was productive, was perceived by some buyers to be a bit unattractive. Nevertheless, the SsangYong Actyon still managed to gain a considerable popularity among local buyers, due to the high level of value for money it offered. The SsangYong Actyon came with a powerful engine, which was a 2.0 L common rail VGT turbo diesel locomotive that utilized either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission, which achieved a combined fuel economy of 13.5 km/l on the roads of Sri Lanka.

SsangYong, similar to other world-renowned vehicle brands, has also been experimenting with alternative fuel technologies that help its vehicles to run longer while spending less money in the process. The company has been experimenting with such technologies since as far back as 2009. The most recent attempt by the SsangYong Motor Company to develop a fuel saving vehicle is the Hybrid powered SsangYong SIV-2, which is currently at an experimental stage. Nevertheless, as of now a full-fledged SsangYong Hybrid vehicle is still not available for buying within the Sri Lankan market, though we can expect this to change in the near future.
